The Rise of European Debt Funds

European debt funds really took off in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). A few had existed earlier, but the losses suffered by commercial banks on their real estate loans following the crisis provided a market opportunity for institutional investors. Many banks had distressed real estate loans on their books, while regulators imposed stricter capital requirements, meaning that they needed to reduce their exposure to the most risky loans.
