Recap: Advanced Sustainability in London

On 6 and 7 May, we held the Advanced Sustainability for Real Estate course, led by Abigail Dean at Nuveen Real Estate’s London office.

The programme included two days of discussion on how sustainability considerations are shaping investment decisions across assets and portfolios. Participants also enjoyed a property tour of Devonshire Square and a group dinner, offering a chance to connect with peers from across Europe.

Across the two days, participants explored both strategic themes and practical execution, guided by a strong line‑up of industry experts:

  • Brett Ormrod (LaSalle Investment Management) examined the transition to low‑carbon portfolios and how strategies are evolving in response to market expectations
  • Elisabeth Hermann Frederiksen (Urban Partners) shared practical insights on asset decarbonisation and the challenges of implementation at asset level
  • Derk Welling (APG Asset Management) provided an investor perspective on climate risk management and portfolio resilience
  • Georgie Nelson (Aberdeen) highlighted the growing importance of biodiversity in the built environment and its role in long‑term value creation
  • Aleksandra Njagulj (DWS) unpacked ESG‑related regulations and their implications for real estate investment managers
  • Arabella Edwards (JLL) explored how sustainability factors are influencing property values and valuation approaches
  • Aneta Rusiniak (Invesco) discussed how environmental considerations are being integrated into underwriting processes
  • Yana Georgieva (Schroders Capital) explained Schroders’ impact investing framework and how it is applied in practice

The course concluded with an interactive case study, where participants worked through real‑world scenarios and applied the concepts discussed throughout the programme.

Some feedback from participants include:

“It was very interesting to tackle ESG from different angles, not only focusing on the positive impact on returns and understanding the main regulations, but also practical examples of how ESG can improve the lives of people and wildlife.”

“The case study was one of the most interesting and interactive business cases I’ve ever done in an INREV course. We really enjoyed the role-playing, which helped us understand real issues.”
