The most severe economic recession in the US since the Great Depression; applies to both the US recession, officially lasting from December 2007 to June 2009, and the ensuing global recession in 2009; began when values in the US housing market collapsed, and large amounts of mortgage-backed securities (MBSs) and derivatives lost significant value; also known as the “Global Financial Crisis (GFC)”.
