Portfolio Construction recap: a full day of expert insights

Following the mentorship kick-off, over 30 real estate professionals gathered on 9 July at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam for INREV’s Portfolio Construction course, led by Matthew Ryall.

Despite some rainy weather dampening the beachside dinner the night before at Strand Zuid, spirits remained positive as participants connected informally ahead of the course.

The day delivered a rich mix of academic and practical application around building optimal portfolios by size, location and available products, thanks to an impressive line-up of industry experts:

  • Dirk Brounen (Maastricht University) laid the foundation with portfolio construction theory.
  • Andrew Angeli (Zurich Insurance) explored how macroeconomic trends and market cycles shape investment strategy.
  • Achal Gandhi (CBRE Investment Management) provided a real-world example of real estate’s role within a multi-asset portfolio.
  • Maarten van der Spek (Spek Advisory) reflected on the benefits and risks of leverage as well as the impact of different fee structures on performance.
  • Charlotte Robinson (APG) shared a practical case study of how APG built its real estate portfolio over time.
  • Laurens-Jan Portier (a.s.r.) closed the speaker line-up with insights on how investors identify good managers to work with.

The course concluded with an interactive case study, where participants applied their learning to construct and present their own real estate portfolios.
