INREV ESG Seminar 2023: key highlights

INREV gathered with members for the second ESG Seminar on Thursday 25 May in London. During this dedicated seminar, members had the opportunity to hear and discuss the main ESG topics impacting the industry from SFDR, net zero, biodiversity, and the “S” in ESG as well as valuation and technology.

Here’s some of the key highlights from the programme and the presentations.

Surveying the EU landscape: trends in ESG regulation

Sasha Njagulj, Global Head of ESG for Real Estate, DWS, drew upon her extensive knowledge and expertise to clarify the complicated and rapidly evolving landscape of ESG regulation. She provided a snapshot of the commonalities and differences of SFDR and EU Taxonomy and explained how they approach and implement the regulations at DWS.

Navigating the transition: is there a realistic road map towards net zero?

Justin Travlos, Global Head of Responsible Investment, AXA IM Real Assets, brought out the concerning truth of the large gap between the Paris Agreement goals and the real estate industry’s current pledges and ambition to net zero. With his thought provoking presentation, he spoke about the challenges of implementation as well as the practical steps to get net zero.

Panel: Delivering net zero: practical strategies and solutions

Abigail Dean (seminar moderator) chaired a lively and insightful panel debate on the strategies and solutions on delivering net zero. Andrea van Buren, Senior Portfolio Manager Real Estate, MN; Sidsel Green, Head of Impact & Insights, Urban Partners; Brett Ormrod, Net Zero Carbon Lead, LaSalle Investment Management; and Justin Travlos, Global Head of Responsible Investment, AXA IM Real Assets shared a wide range of perspectives on the challenging task to achieve 2050 goals and emphasised the importance of acting now.

Force of nature: the importance of biodiversity in the built environment

Emily Hamilton, Head of ESG, Savills IM opened a new discussion and presented on the importance of biodiversity in real estate and integrating nature based solutions into climate resilience plans. She explained how they embed biodiversity considerations into the real estate investment life cycle at Savills IM.

Making everyone count: quantifying the S in ESG

In the afternoon session, Shuen Chan, Head of ESG, LGIM Real Assets shared their inspiring approach to place based social impact for the real asset sector. She spoke about why the social impact matters, what it means for investors and how to measure it. Presenting their four pillar approach to social impact ‘community’, ‘commercial’, ‘collaboration’ and ‘catalytic’, she highlighted the importance of making the social impact strategies scalable for the portfolio.

ESG data and technology: challenges and solutions

During the last panel discussion, Luc van de Boom Co-Founder & Chief Business Officer, Scaler and Phillip Oliver Chief Commercial Officer, Deepki explored the crucial role that technology is playing in the net zero transition.
