Total real estate performance turns negative in 2020

According to the Global Investor Index 2021, total real estate performance reached -1.00% in 2020 on a value weighted basis, down significantly from the 10.20% in 2019.

Key highlights:

  • Investor total global real estate performance turned negative in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Asia Pacific and Europe delivered weighted average returns of -0.33% and -0.54%, respectively, while North America saw a more dramatic slowdown, returning -8.76%
  • With a weighted average return of 2.81%, the 2020 performance of direct real estate investments remained positive, while non-listed real estate delivered a negative return of -0.77%

This Index enables investors across the world to track and compare their performance against their peers, providing a 360-degree perspective. It takes account of all four main routes to real estate investment – listed, non-listed, direct and commercial real estate debt.
