Total real estate performance turns positive in 2021

On a value weighted basis, the Global Investor Index posted a total real estate return of 13.27% in 2021, up significantly from the -1.00% posted in 2020.


Key highlights:

  • Investor total global real estate performance turned positive in 2021, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.
  • On a value weighted basis, total real estate performance in Asia Pacific and Europe reached 11.76% and 9.63% in 2021, while North America outperformed with a total return of 33.13%.
  • With a weighted average return of 14.93%, the 2021 performance of non-listed real estate investments surpassed the returns of direct real estate investments at 6.39%.


This Index enables investors across the world to track and compare their performance against their peers, providing a 360-degree perspective. It takes account of all four main routes to real estate investment – listed, non-listed, direct and commercial real estate debt.
The Index covers activity in all major real estate sectors and spans across key geographic regions, including Europe, Asia Pacific, North America, South America and Africa.
